Encryption in information technology is one of the tools used to protect information managed through computers and computer networks increasing its level of security. Encryption has been used since ancient times to "obfuscate" information so it can not be read or understood by people not authorized to. It therefore is another weapon for whoever wishes to defend his or her privacy, intellectual property and products from prying eyes.
